C2 – Bennani winner after a spectacular duel with Comte

Nothing is decided until the last corner in some motorsport disciplines, and the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) has proven this. The second race of the meeting in Wuhan (China) on Sunday featured a close duel between Mehdi Bennani (Volkswagen) and Aurélien Comte (Peugeot ), to the advantage of the first named.

Starting on pole, the driver of Sébastien Loeb Racing led the first 17 laps without too much trouble. However, Bordeaux's Peugeot 308 TCR gained momentum as the tires wore down.

Back in the exhausts of Mehdi Bennani, Aurélien Comte took the lead at the cost of a few strollers three turns from the finish. Then, protecting the inside line, the Frenchman braked in the dirty part of the track and veered wide, making the task easier for his rival, who definitely overtook him.

" Victory !! Great !! » exclaimed Mehdi Bennani as soon as the line was crossed. He becomes the 12th different winner in this 2018 WTCR season. “It was very tough this weekend, our car is very heavy because of the Balance of Performance (BoP). I have to drive at 110% to be in front”, explained the Moroccan.

Aurélien Comte finished second, ahead Nathanaël Berthon (Audi), who signs his first podium of the year. Among the favorites for the title, only Jean Karl Vernay (Audi, 5th) and Yvan muller (Hyundai) finished in the points (10th).

Aurelien Panis (Audi) ranks seventh. Yann Ehrlacher (Honda) is 15th. John Filippi (Cupra) retired after hitting Thed Björk (Hyundai, retirement) at the end of the straight.
