C2 – Stolz-Engel escape clashes at Brands Hatch

To close the opening weekend of the Blancpain GT World Challenge Europe, the 25 competitors had a blast at Brands Hatch (Great Britain). This Sunday, May 5, we witnessed multiple twists and turns.

Accidents marked the first half hour. At the first braking, Markus Winkelhock (Audi) and Proto Taylor (Lamborghini) rubbed together more than necessary and retired. Then, a few minutes later, Christian Engelhart (Lamborghini) sent Phil Keen (Lamborghini) spinning and received a pit stop penalty.

The prize for the most spectacular collision goes to David Perel (Ferrari), which affected Frédéric Vervisch (Audi). Returning in the opposite direction to the middle of the track, the Belgian was hit by Andrea Bertolini (Ferrari), who himself damaged the right door of Christopher Haase (Audi), while Dries Vanthoor (Audi) and Rik Breukers (Audi) hit the rail.

In this mayhem, three men gave up (Vanthoor, Breukers, Bertolini). The Full Course Yellow was issued and this is where several penalties were awarded: Thomas Neubauer (Mercedes, winner of Race 1) went too fast and Fabian Schiller (Mercedes, pole sitter) overtook a car.

In this race punctuated with incidents, Maro Engel and Luca Stolz (Mercedes) were one of the rare drivers to have had a quiet race. The Germans led the race from the mid-effort driver change and took victory. Second place should go to Vincent Abril and Raffaele Marciello (Mercedes), but the Monegasque suddenly stopped a quarter of an hour from the end, suffering from mechanical damage.

Starting outside the top 10, Andrea Caldarelli and Marco Mapelli (Lamborghini) took the opportunity to finish second. The podium is completed by Nick Foster and Steijn Schothorst (Audi). The first Frenchman is Simon Gachet (Audi), seventh with a damaged door.
