A completely insane scenario unfolded at Monza this Sunday. The GT World Challenge race was particularly chaotic right from the start with a massive pile-up involving a large number of cars. Following a collision in the pack, incidents escalated, and the top five cars on the starting grid were all involved.
The two Ford Mustangs, number 64, which had started from pole position, and number 65, both crashed, as did the Porsche Number 10 of Boutsen VDS, who is definitely having a run of bad luck and has still not managed to get past the first corner this season. Endurance Cup. Another victim, the crew of the Classic Ferrari for sale No. 51 of Alessio Rovera and Nicklas Nielsen could not go any further.
Once the race restarted after the safety car period, the standings were completely shaken up, and many crews who started far back on the grid – which had 57 entries – made significant gains. Ultimately, after five safety car periods (a record in the category), the #66 Tresor Attempto Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II (Rocco Mazzola, Sebastian Øgaard, and Ariel Levi) unexpectedly found itself in the lead, benefiting from a poor strategic decision by the McLaren No. 23, who was leading before returning to the pits a lap too early, just before the Full Course Yellow was triggered.
There were only a few minutes left and the local favorite, Rocco Mazzola, didn't seem able to resist the comeback of the favorites behind, especially the Mercedes Benz No. 48 was driven by the experienced Lucas Auer, Luca Stolz, and Maro Engel. But fate intervened once again: Kelvin van der Linde (BMW No. 32) collided with a Porsche at the first corner, which then sped through the field, causing further damage to several cars and taking out the No. 87 Mercedes of Marvin Dienst, who was in second place, as well as the No. 25 Audi of Saintéloc Racing with Ezequiel. Perez Companc. A real disappointment also for the Saint-Étienne team, which was in the top 5.
The deployment of a fifth safety car following this latest pile-up allowed Tresor Attempto Racing to celebrate their victory: it's the team's first in Endurance racing, and they also secured the overall win with a Silver-rated crew – a resounding achievement. Especially considering that Rocco Mazzola, Sebastian Øgaard, and Ariel Levi started only 29th on the grid. They thus equaled the record for the worst starting position for a winning crew in the GT World Challenge (the winners also started 29th at Monza in 2023 and at Spa in 2012).
This is also Audi's first victory since Hockenheim 2022, a four-year wait!

Sorry, but you're slightly mistaken. It was the number 10 BOUTSEN VDS team car that had difficulty reaching the first corner: it went off before it even reached the corner at Paul Ricard, as well as in this race at Monza. Another incorrect piece of information is that this car managed to complete a few laps in the Sprint Cup at Brand Hatch before being taken out by another Porsche. The LionSpeed GP Porsche #80 completed 95 laps at Paul Ricard before a mechanical problem and won race two in the Sprint Cup at Brand Hatch (retiring in the first race due to power steering issues). Given that you rarely cover GT World, please do it properly ;)
