Jimmie Johnson wins The Clash at Daytona

A collective crash, the rain… The first confrontation on the track in Nascar this year will not have been the clearest yesterday on the oval of Daytona (Florida), for the traditional meeting of Clash, which opens the week before the Daytona 500, the first event counting for the overall Cup Series standings.

Winner of this race in 2005, Jimmie Johnson (Chevrolet – Hendrick Motorsports) had not had any success since, having suffered six consecutive accidents over the last six years. But this time, the seven-time Nascar champion did not miss the opportunity to win, even being at the origin of the Big One of this round.

With rain expected above Daytona Beach, Johnson attacked leader Paul Menard (Ford – Wood Brothers Racing). Contact between the two drivers then occurred on the straight and if Johnson managed to control his Chevrolet Camaro, Menard started across the front of the peloton and the chain reaction ensued, involving the vast majority of the peloton.

And with the arrival of rain, the race management was forced to stop the event after 59 of the 75 laps scheduled. Johnson ultimately won ahead of Kurt Busch (Chevrolet – Chip Ganassi Racing), Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney (Ford – Team Penske) and Alex Bowman (Hendrick Motorsports).

The fourth Toyota Camry ont été impliquées dans le Big One, Kyle Busch se classant finalement 14e et meilleur représentant du clan nippon.
