Jules Gounon changes sporting nationality. In 2023, the native of Aubenas will abandon his French sports license to compete under the colors of Andorra, a border country between France and Spain but above all, his country of residence for two years. The pilot Mercedes in GT will therefore use the Andorran flag on his suit and on his mount next season.

He thus imitates his teammate Raffaele Marciello, who also changed his sporting nationality in 2022. The Italian, born in Zurich in Switzerland, chose to represent his country of birth, denouncing a lack of support from the Italian Federation .

If Jules Gounon made the choice of the heart by choosing Andorra as his new sporting nationality, the recent winner of the 24 Hours of Spa and the 12 Hours of Bathurst also wanted, implicitly, to protest against the French Motor Sport Federation (FFSA) and its lack of recognition.

The Frenchman had notably criticized the fact of not having been rewarded during the “Motor Sport Trophies” ceremony organized by the FFSA on December 12 despite his superb season. However, in his announcement published on social networks, the soon-to-be 28-year-old driver also declares that he wants to help the development of motorsport in the co-principality of the Pyrenees.

“New year, new me, new racing house, can we read on the Mercedes driver’s Instagram post. I am who I am, I live where I live, I love what I love, I look back at 2022 and feel grateful. In 2023 I will run for the Andorran Federation with the Andorran flag. I'm excited to run for the country I live in and love. In addition to this, I will also support young and aspiring Andorran pilots, offering them my experience and expertise. It's good to see a federation that is proud to have you and wants you to wear its colors! »
