South America in sight for WTCR 2023

In 2022 the Asian tour was erased from the shelves due to a decision taken by the promoters in agreement with the Chinese, Korean and Macau GP organizers. Jean Baptiste Ley, the new boss of the World Cup, wants to allow the WTCR to bounce back well in 2023. The decision is therefore to turn to strong nations in motorsport. The countries of South America present themselves as legitimate candidates for the organization of events for the next financial year. Argentina and Uruguay appear to be the favorites to each host a round of the World Touring Car Cup next year.

Nestor Girolami and Esteban Guerrieri for Argentina and Santiago Urrutia for Uruguay are excellent ambassadors to help import the WTCR to their home countries. Both countries are unconditional fans of motor sports and their infrastructures are largely capable of hosting FIA-labelled events. The choice of circuits is not yet official but everything seems to be designed by Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina (last destination of the WTCC on Argentine soil in 2017, editor's note). The Uruguayan round could be contested at Riviera or El Pinar as long as they obtain their grade for the organization of an FIA event.

Concerning the end of the 2022 season, the official announcement has still not been finalized but several countries in the Emirates have placed themselves in the running to host the last three rounds of the season.

Hermann TILKE was called to the rescue to expand El Pinar in the mid-2010s to make it an FIA Grade 2 circuit which now offers 10 different tracks, enough to delight the WTCR!

It would be better for the Uruguayan round to be at El Pinar in the suburbs of Montevideo (an opportunity to upgrade the route) rather than going to the Pampas (because it is on the border with Brazil) at Rivera on the Autódromo Internacional Eduardo P .Cabrera!!
