No miracle for Bathurst. The 12 Hour event, which traditionally opened theIntercontinental GT Challenge, cannot be organized in 2021, given the multiple travel restrictions put in place to stem the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s a difficult decision but one we ultimately had to make, admits Sean Seamer, director of Supercars. Since we started running the event, it has grown into one of the biggest endurance races in the world, showcasing our heart of Australian racing to an international audience.
With Australia's borders expected to remain closed, we believe it is in the best interests of competitors, fans, sponsors and broadcasters to make the decision now regarding next year.
We are absolutely committed to the event returning to the Australian motorsport calendar in 2022.”
A hard blow for SRO Motorsports who had successfully integrated the Australian clock tower into theIGTC since 2016, but which will have to be resolved to start its 2021 campaign at the 24 Hours of Spa.
The month of February will not, however, be empty of any racing on the Mount Panorama Circuit, since the 2021 Supercars championship will be launched on this Bathurst track.
