Mercedes-AMG lifts the veil on its new GT2

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GT2, the most powerful homologated customer racing car produced by AMG © Mercedes-AMG

After the GT3 and the GT4, Mercedes-AMG takes on the GT2. The star brand continues to expand its racing program for customer competitions. In 2023, a GT2 model will complete the fleet of Affalterbach cars, which are already enjoying great success in the categories in which they are entered. The GT3 version also won the GT World Challenge Europe and the 24 Hours of Spa with Akkodis ASP this year.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT2 is the most powerful homologated racing car ever produced by the German firm, for customer competition. It is powered by an AMG 8-liter twin-turbo V4,0 developing 520 kW (707 hp), more than the GT3 which it also outperforms in top speed. Power is transmitted through a six-speed sequential gearbox with modified ratios. As on all GT models, the gearbox is mounted on the rear axle in a transaxle configuration and is connected to the engine via a torsionally and torque-rigid carbon torque tube. The suspension includes fully configurable competition shock absorbers and adjustable anti-roll bars.

“The Mercedes-AMG GT2 incorporates all the experience we have acquired in recent years in our Customer Racing activities, detailed Stefan Wendl, head of customer competition at Mercedes-AMG. In addition to the proven features of the GT3 and GT4, we have also integrated completely new racing technologies, specially developed for the GT2. The result is the most powerful homologated race car we have built to date. But we managed to ensure that gentlemen drivers who don't race every weekend can control this power. »

While the GT3 is increasingly used by professional drivers and the GT4 mainly marks the entry into the world of GT racing, the Mercedes-AMG GT2 is aimed more specifically at the group of gentlemen drivers. The German mount will now be subjected to several weeks of testing, particularly on the circuits visited by the GT2 European Series. Marketing of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 will begin during the 2023 season.
