Mikel Azcona: The Labors of Hercules

Mikel Azcona on his way to his second European title - ©TCR media

A bit like in the good old days of NASCAR, when some of his drivers competed (Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon, in particular) in the same weekend for the 500 Miles of Indianapolis and the Coca-Cola 600 of Charlotte, Mikel Azcona is preparing to take on a spectacular challenge. In the fight for the TCR Europe title (he leads the championship with 53 points ahead of Franco Girolami), the Spaniard wants to try to win his second European title and race the WTCR round at Most.

To make this challenge possible, Azcona must count on the vagaries of the planning of the two events. Taking advantage of the absence of activity on the track on Saturday in Most, the young Spaniard wants to try a smoking gun: “ As there is the EWC round in the Czech Republic (motorcycle endurance world championship, editor's note) at the same time as the WTCR, I have the opportunity to come and race in Barcelona in TCR Europe. My plan is to be at Most on Friday and do free practice and WTCR qualifying. I then jump on a plane to Barcelona. Saturday morning I take part in qualifying and race 1 of the TCR Europe. If all goes well I can be titled at the end of this race and I can return to Most to race in WTCR on Sunday morning »

In the event of a problem, Azcona should resolve to spend his weekend in Montmelo.

Everything seems well oiled on paper, Azcona can accomplish a unique feat in this resumption of international touring races. To do this, he must finish his race ahead of Girolami, whatever the position of the two men in the race. In WTCR, he is currently 8th in the general classification, 31 points behind Yann Ehrlacher, mathematically with 8 races remaining in the season, he can still aim for the title.
