The Richard Childress Racing driver, grandson of the team's owner, won in style at the Brickyard in Indianapolis by ultimately beating the Toyota from the Joe Gibbs to the pole sitter Kyle Busch. Both drivers took advantage of the interruption of the race on the 71st lap to be able to conserve fuel. On the 77th lap after the restart, Dillon took the advantage over the youngest of the Busch brothers to no longer be caught. The story goes that Richard Childress ordered his driver to give it his all with six laps to go, thus contradicting the orders to save fuel given by Mike Dillon, Ty's father and spotter.

Mat Kenseth (Joe Gibbs) took 3rd place ahead of Kevin Harvick (JR Motorsports) who had led 33 of the 100 laps of the event. Among the championship leaders, Regan Smith (JR Motorsports) ranks 10th and ahead of his teammate Chase Elliott, who nevertheless retains the overall lead after the Indianapolis round.
