Nascar – Redesign of the racing format in 2017

The 2017 championship season Nascar will the introduction of a new racing format, as confirmed by American officials last night during a press conference.

Here are the main changes made starting this year for the three series Monster Energy Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series to bring more spectacle and intensity to the Nascar rounds.

– Races will now consist of three segments, with points offered at the end of each part. Segments 1 and 2 will each span approximately 25 to 30% of the total race distance. Between each segment, a yellow flag period will be established (with passage to the pits possible), before a restart under green flag.

– The first 10 of the first two segments will obtain championship points in the following format: ten units for the winner, nine for second… up to tenth place which will earn one point. The winners of the first two segments will also collect a bonus point counting towards the playoffs. The result of a race can be confirmed at the end of the second segment in the event of premature interruption.

– The winner of the third segment will be declared the winner of the race, and will receive 40 championship points for their success, as well as five bonus points counting towards the playoffs. The second will receive 35 points, the third 34... until 36th place will award one point, as will the ranking from 37th to 40th place.

– The traditional bonus points awarded for the greatest number of laps led and for leading a lap in a race are removed.

– The winner of a race is qualified for the Chase, on the same basis as in 2016.

– The driver finishing first at the end of the regular season (after the first twenty-six races) will be awarded a bonus of 15 points for the Chase in the event of qualification. Ten points will be given to second place...up to tenth place, where one point will be awarded. All drivers qualified for the playoffs will have their total points set at 2000 points, to which will be added the various bonus points collected in the regular season, which will be taken into account until the end of the third round of the Chase, before the final.

– The format of the Chase, however, remains identical to that seen last year, with four drivers eliminated in each round then the Miami final, where the highest ranked of the four finalists will be declared champion.
