In July 2024, NASCAR had presented a 100% electric prototype, capable of developing up to 1000 kW (i.e. 1360 horsepower!) as part of the “ NASCAR Impact" aimed at a complete decarbonization of the sport by 2035. Chevrolet, one of the three manufacturers involved in the American championship, followed suit by unveiling this Thursday the Blazer EV.R, the Detroit firm's interpretation of the future of the discipline. A presentation that comes just a few days before the Daytona 500, the premier event and opening round of the NASCAR championship.

The Chevrolet-developed prototype also produces more than 1.300 horsepower from three six-phase electric motors that instantly rev to 15 rpm, powered by a 000 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack. Built on the chassis and suspension components of the NASCAR “Next Gen,” the Blazer EV.R uses a programmable all-wheel-drive system and Goodyear Racing Eagle tires. Chevrolet worked closely with NASCAR and other manufacturers on the prototype’s parameters and technical elements, while General Motors’ design department collaborated with engineers to give the Blazer EV.R styling cues inspired by the production Blazer EV SS.

“As we continue to race our proven, winning V8 technology in NASCAR for years to come, we are continually looking for ways to improve the combination of power, durability and efficiency to transfer learnings from the track to the street, especially as we strengthen Chevrolet’s production electric lineup.”, says Eric Warren, executive director of global motorsports competition at General Motors. Motorsports is a test bed for innovation and a training ground for our engineers, allowing Chevrolet to test new technologies in a fast-paced environment, against the best competition.”

General Motors engineers successfully took the prototype from concept to reality and then put it through laps in race conditions during testing last month at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. Chevrolet driver and 2024 NASCAR Xfinity champion Justin Allgaier drove the prototype during testing. “There are so many things you don’t think about until you’re in the car testing it, did he declare. I'm used to knowing my speed by gear ratio and engine rpm, so I had to completely change the way I judge corner entry speed. With this platform, we learn to strategically adjust regenerative braking, which has a big impact on braking sections and corner balance."
