Harrison Burton (Wood Brothers Racing) chose his place and time well to win his first race in the NASCAR Cup Series! The young 23-year-old driver won at Daytona, and thus validated his ticket for the playoffs, just before the last race of the regular season.

Burton at the same time offers the hundredth victory to the legendary team of the Wood brothers, entered in NASCAR for 71 years. Kyle Busch (Richard Childress Racing) was leading the race entering the final lap, but had to settle for second after Burton was pushed forward by stunning rookie Parker Retzlaff (Beard Motorsports).

As is often the case at Daytona, the race was marked by several accidents, involving a large part of the peloton. One of them notably forced Justin Haley (Rick Ware Racing), Joey Logano (Team Penske) and Michael McDowell (Front Row Motorsports), three of the strong men of this round, to retire. In the final laps, Josh Berry (Stewart-Haas Racing) was the victim of an impressive exit, when his Ford turned around on the back straight, before hitting the inside wall, while being on the roof. Berry escaped without injury, after a race in which he was also at the forefront for a long time.

With this first career victory, Harrison Burton becomes the thirteenth driver to qualify for the playoffs this season. Next week, at Darlington, the last race of the regular season will reveal the names of the last three qualified for the first phase of the playoffs. If Martin Truex Jr. (Joe Gibbs Racing) should logically qualify on points, the fight for the two remaining places risks being fiercely contested, because as we saw this weekend, a victory and that is a guaranteed place in the “postseason”…

Hello, I'm brand new to Nascar and trying to understand the rules. I don't understand why Burton is qualified for the playoffs when he is not in the top 30? Thank you for your response!!
