The Wonderful Pistachio 400 race held on the Richmond oval was the last event before the start of the Chase, the second stage of the Championship where only the 12 best drivers of the season will be able to compete for the Sprint Cup Series title (the first ten of the Championship with the two most victorious drivers outside the top ten of the ranking).
Kevin Harvick won at the end of the 400 laps of the race, beating Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway Racing) by a tenth at the finish line. The driver of the No. 99 Ford is ahead of Jeff Gordon (Roush Fenway Racing), victorious last weekend in Atlanta. The top five is completed by David Ragan (Roush Fenway Racing) and Kurt Busch (Penske Racing).
Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing), ninth in the race, and Brad Keselowski (Penske Racing), secure the Chase by joining the top ten drivers in the Championship. Dale Earnhardt Jr (Hendrick Motorsports) and Tony Stewart (Stewart-Haas Racing) also remain in the race for the title.
Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing), sixth behind his brother, regains the lead of the Sprint Cup with the same number of points as Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports), who only ranks 31st after hitting the wall on the 246th lap.
