Martin keeps enough fuel

Mark Martin is the big winner of the Michigan race. Third before the last lap, the Chevrolet driver was able to keep enough fuel to finish in the lead which was not the case for Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle. The two leaders before the last lap ran out of fuel in the last two miles of the race and let the victory slip away.

Mark Martin couldn't believe his eyes when he crossed the finish line in the lead. “II thought I could keep up with Johnson and Bifle but in fact their pace was too fast. So I saved fuel. (?) When Jimmie [Johnson] came out, I said to myself: ?I have to go all out! There's barely one lap left. What could happen to me? I can do it.? I can't believe we won », he enthused. 13th overall before the Michigan meeting, the 50-year-old driver entered the Top 12 qualifying for the Chase by rising to 8th place.

The poor performance of the day is obviously to the credit of Jimmie Johnson who led for 146 of the 200 laps. He even managed to build a lead of seven seconds over his pursuers on two occasions. In the end, he crossed the finish line in 22nd position after refueling one last time before the last lap. Behind the winner of the day, we find Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards. The Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya took a good sixth place.
