Nascar – Hamlin wins the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona

Denny Hamlin won all three segments of the Sprint Unlimited race held last night at Daytona (not counting for the Championship) after a crash eliminated many contenders for victory. The winner of the 2013 season finale at Miami-Homestead took advantage of the clean air in the final laps to keep his distance from the peloton. “The best car won, that’s for sure”, declared the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. “That’s two in a row now. We are building something. It was a matter of survival. The field was very tight with three laps to go, but this car was phenomenal. »

The drivers discovered the structure of the Sprint United chosen based on fan votes just before the start. The format chosen was that of 30-25-20 laps for each segment while the starting grid formed by the times of the free practice sessions. The race was marked by a multiple crash involving half the peloton. The accident occurred when Matt Kenseth (Joe Gibbs Racing) closed the door on Joey Logano (Team Penske). Tony Stewart (Stewart-Haas Racing) and teammates Kurt Busch and Danica Patrick were among the victims, as were Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports), Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr (Roush Fenway Racing). Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports) saw his chances disappear at the start of the race when he hit the inside wall.

Denny Hamlin finally won ahead of Brad Keselowski (Team Penske) and Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing). Joey Logano placed fourth ahead of Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) who saved Chevrolet's honor by lifting his SS into the top five. The model serving as a safety car was less fortunate since a malfunction in the safety ramp caused a fire to start.
