The team Joe gibbs racing retained his title on the Sprint Unlimited which traditionally opens the season NASCAR on the Florida oval of Daytona. After Denny Hamlin last year, it’s Matt Kenseth who came to win last night at the wheel of the Toyota No. 20. The 2003 champion overcame the two main race incidents to win ahead Martin Truex Jr. (Furniture Row) who led the greatest number of rounds, and Carl edwards, who begins his collaboration with Joe Gibbs perfectly by finishing 3rd. Danica Patrick (Stewart-Haas) finished in 10th place.
The event was interrupted twice by a red flag, a first for a Big One on the 45th lap following a first contact between Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway) and Jamie McMurray (Ganassi), involving numerous competitors including Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick), pole sitter Paul Menard (Richard Childress Racing) and Denny Hamlin. The second red flag was displayed after an accident involving Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch (Stewart-Haas Racing) and Greg Biffle.
The post-race was also turbulent in the pits with an altercation between reigning champion Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) and Joey Logano (Penske), following a first confrontation on track in the final laps.
