Martin Truex Jr (Toyota) won his seventh race of the season at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, ahead of Kurt Bush (Ford) and Ryan Blaney (Ford). Nothing could stop the American driver on the 2,4 kilometer long oval, not even a loose wheel or a penalty imposed by the marshals during a poorly negotiated restart.
The winner of the Kansas stage dedicated this performance to Jim Watson, a mechanic from his Furniture Row Racing team who died of a heart attack last week. “We ran with heavy hearts, but we are relieved to report this success”, thus expressed Martin Truex Jr. In the championship, the Toyota driver widens the gap on Kyle Bush (Toyota) to 27 points. Brad Keselowski (Ford) is at 43 units.
The event was marked by a pile-up on the 198th lap. Fourteen cars were involved including Matt Kenseth (Toyota), disqualified for a rare reason. Seven mechanics repaired his car in the pits, which is too many according to the regulations.
Four drivers were definitively eliminated from the title race (the “Chase”): Jamie McMurray (Chevrolet), Ricky Stenhouse Jr (Ford), Matt Kenseth and Kyle Larson (Chevrolet). Seven-time champion of the discipline Jimmie Johnson (Chevrolet) came close to being punished by sliding twice. He finished 11th and remained in contention for the Chase.
