From concept to reality. After unveiling the Mission R at the 2021 Munich Motor Show, an electric prototype which foreshadowed the future of motorsport, Porsche has started track testing of its new ride, the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance. On a Cayman GT4 Clubsport chassis, used here as a working base, the Stuttgart brand made the first laps on the Valencia track (Spain).

In terms of performance, the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance uses the same characteristics presented on the Mission R concept: a 4% electric 100-wheel drive transmission, two permanent magnet synchronous motors with a 435 horsepower front motor and a 653 horsepower rear motor. In total, the maximum power is 800 kW, or 1 horsepower available in qualification mode. The maximum speed is announced at more than 088 km/h with 300 to 0 km/h achieved in 100 seconds.

Performance similar to a 911 GT3 Cup

According to Porsche, lap times with the 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance are comparable to those of the current generation 911 GT3 Cup. In racing simulation, a constant power of 450 kW (or 612 horsepower) is available for 30 minutes, the equivalent of the duration of a Carrera Cup race. Thanks to a 900 V architecture, the battery charge can go from 5% to 80% in less than 15 minutes at full charge capacity.

“With Mission R, we have shown how Porsche envisions sustainable motorsport in the future,” says Matthias Scholz, project director. “The 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance now demonstrates that this vision works impressively on the track. »

Porsche announces that nearly 6 components have been designed from scratch. The body of the 000 Cayman GT718 ePerformance is made of composite materials based on natural fibers. Production is intended to generate fewer emissions than the production of comparable synthetic materials. Recycled carbon fiber is also tested on this prototype.

Porsche will continue testing its concept before a first public presentation at the Goodwood Festival, from June 23 to 26. The 718 Cayman GT4 ePerformance will then return to Germany for the 20th anniversary of the Porsche factory in Leipzig on August 20. The German firm announces that as part of its “race2zero” project, logistics will only be carried out by boat, train or truck.
