Rob Huff wins 100th race in WTCR history

It was a thrilling race, with Zengö Motorsport's British driver Rob Huff winning for the fourth time in the WTCR. Yvan Muller (Lynk & Co), first leader of the race, was trapped in the joker lap. The Frenchman finished 4th just behind the World Cup leader, Mikel Azcona, who reached the podium with Huff and Attila Tassi (Honda Racing). Yann Ehrlacher 8th and Santiago Urrutia 10th limit the damage.

Rob Huff wins 100th race in WTCR history

Unwittingly, Mikel Azcona caused trouble in this second WTCR race. When the Spaniard took his joker lap, he “shot” one of the pins which demarcates the chicane of the joker lap (the Spanish driver is under investigation regarding this fact of racing, we still do not have the decision at the moment, editor’s note). All the drivers who passed through this part of the track were subsequently trapped. Among them was Yvan Muller, then a solid leader of the race. The Frenchman had to slow down considerably to stay within the limits of the track. This mishap cost him his place on the podium. However, he had started his race well by getting a solid start ahead of Tassi, Huff and Azcona in the first laps of the race. Tiago Monteiro (Honda Racing) unlucky for his home race ends up in the wall following a puncture, he takes along with him the unfortunate Esteban Guerrieri. The safety car was called onto the track to evacuate the two Hondas. At the “restart”, Yvan Muller resumed his race in the lead, with mastery, until the incident in the joker lap.

Rob Huff enters the game by delaying his wild card turn as long as possible. His team gives him in real time his gap with Attila Tassi and Mikel Azcona. It was only a few minutes before the end of the race that he entered the joker lap of the circuit. The timing was perfect because shortly after he resumed the race in the lead, his teammate Daniel Nagy violently hit the rail. Nathanaël Berthon (Audi Sport Comtoyou) cannot avoid it and hits it head-on. The two cars obstructing the track, the safety car is active again. Rob Huff wins this round under safety car regime. A well-deserved victory for the Briton and his small team of Zengö Motorsport warriors.

In the WTCR general classification, Mikel Azcona takes the lead ahead of Santi Urrutia and Yann Ehrlacher. The little break before the restart in Vallelunga (Italy) will do everyone good. The appointment is therefore made from July 22 to 24.
