TCR – The Volkswagen Golf GTi evolves for 2017

After leaving the program WRC end 2016, Volkswagen motorsport has refocused on customer competition, notably through the TCR program with the Golf GTi. Winner of the International Series championship last year with Leopard Racing, supported by Team WRT, and its driver Stefano Comini, the Wolfsburg creation quickly showed its strengths in the discipline.

In an attempt to stay at the top of the hierarchy in 2017, VW engineers worked over the winter to improve the GTi both aerodynamically and mechanically. The 2017 specification Golf will thus offer modified lines aimed at greater performance while maintaining reduced costs.

“The strict technical regulations, which aim to ensure affordable costs and tight sporting competition, do not give technicians much room for maneuver, explains Eduard Weidl, TCR project manager at Volkswagen Motorsport.

With the new aerodynamics, we have further optimized the car's performance in fast sections by reducing aerodynamic drag and increasing overall downforce.

In addition, we have also worked on many solutions based on the experience gained during the first year of the car. For example, we have optimized the development of engine power, improved the management of the sequential gearbox and integrated electric power steering. »

Twenty cars were delivered last year, and Volkswagen Motorsport hopes to reach 30 units sold in 2017. The Golf GTi is available from €90 excluding VAT
