Audi Sport ends its involvement in 2020

It's anything but a surprise: Audi Sport will no longer officially support WTCR entries in 2020. An announcement which was expected even though Team WRT, the main representative of the ring brand in the international series, had confirmed yesterday the pause of its programs in the category next year.

Audi Sport thus follows the example of Volkswagen Motorsport, which had formalized the end of its involvement in TCR, against the backdrop of the end of thermal competition for the Wolfsburg brand.

On the other hand, thermal technology will still be there in 2020 for Audi, with GT3 as a bridgehead, notably with the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

“The WTCR has become a premier field and we have been part of it since day one, recalls Chris Reinke, boss of Audi Sport Customer Racing. Since last year, we have achieved 25 podiums, including seven victories.

A big thank you for this to our four drivers, Niels Langeveld, Gordon Shedden, Jean-Karl Vernay and Frédéric Vervisch, as well as to Comtoyou Team Audi Sport, Leopard Racing Team Audi Sport and our partners. Now is the time to open a new chapter. »

180 Audi RS3s were built and should therefore still be entered in the TCR series next year. In WTCR, Comtoyou Racing should return, as confirmed by Audi, on the basis of a completely private entry.

“Comtoyou Racing has expressed interest in competing in the WTCR again in 2020, continues Reinke. We would be very happy about it and wish Jean-Michel Baert and his team that this idea becomes reality. »
