Cupra confirms Gené's return with Azcona

Spanish manufacturer Cupra has announced its drivers for the 2021 World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) season. If we were waiting for confirmation of Mikel Azcona's registration, the surprise comes from the announcement of Jordi Gené's return to the world stage in a touring car.

Regular host of the WTCC between 2005 and 2009 then in international TCR in 2015 and 2016, the 50-year-old Spaniard is therefore making his WTCR debut. “I’m very excited to start racing again with Cupra! I participated in the development of the Cupra Leon Competición, so I know what this model is capable of. It will be an exciting season. »

“After two years at the highest level of touring car racing with victories, my goal this year is to fight for the world title, completes the 24-year-old Navarrese. I am convinced that racing alongside a driver as experienced as Jordi will be the best formula to be competitive and to obtain the best performance. »

The Cupra Racing squad, now complete, brings to 20 confirmed competitors this season with five manufacturers entering their official drivers into private teams (Lynk & Co, Audi, Hyundai, Honda and Cupra Racing)
