The World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) will not travel to Hungary in 2020. The competition was due to start on the Hungaroring circuit from April 24 to 26, but the event was canceled due to measures taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus in this country.
Indeed, the Hungarian government has announced a ban on events bringing together more than 500 people until further notice. “It is not possible to organize the race on another date”, indicates the press release. This decision was taken in consultation with Eurosport Events (promoter of the WTCR), the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Hungaroring Sport Zrt and MNASZ, the Hungarian motorsport federation.
The next two rounds, scheduled alongside the 24 Hours of Nürburgring (Germany, May 20-23) and on the Slovakia Ring (Slovakia, June 5-7), are also placed under surveillance close by Eurosport Events and the local authorities.
In the event of cancellation of these two other meetings, Eurosport Events would propose to the FIA to add a third race to the meetings of Vila Real (Portugal), Salzburgring (Austria), Ningbo (China) or Inje (South Korea) , the objective being to compete in 20 races in 2020.
The two qualifying sessions and two races planned in Hungary will finally be added to the event planned at Motorland Aragon (Spain, July 3-5). This new route in the calendar should therefore accommodate four qualifying sessions and as many races.
