This is one more step that the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) is taking towards private competitors, the core target of Tourism. From 2020, a Trophy will reward the best independent driver of the season, in the spirit of the Independents' Trophy seen in the World Championship (WTCC) between 2005 and 2017.
Only drivers who do not benefit from any support from a manufacturer's customer department will be eligible. For example, the four Lynk & Co entered by Cyan Racing are not accepted in this category.
The WTCR Trophy will not benefit from FIA status, due to its commercial aspect. It is in fact Eurosport Events, the promoter of the series, which is in charge of this point of the sporting regulations.
“We recognize that some companies offer significant assistance to teams and drivers, says François Ribeiro, head of Eurosport Events. But there are structures which do not receive any help of this kind.
In order to give them a better chance of accessing the limelight, in a competitive environment, and toensure that their performance is recognized, we created this WTCR Trophy. »
Eurosport Events will decide who will take part in this Trophy. Drivers who have already obtained a WTCC or WTCR title will not be eligible.
