After his serious accident last year in testing, Tiago Monteiro will make his return by taking part in the inaugural WTCR season with Honda. Esteban Guerrieri will also defend Honda's interests.

WTCR – Monteiro returns with Honda

Tiago Monteiro was well on his way to winning his first WTCC title last year after a decade in the discipline. The ace, a serious accident occurred last September during a test session organized at the Catalunya circuit in Barcelona (Spain) which forced him to go green for the rest of the year.

The Portuguese will have the opportunity to take his revenge since he will be entered in the first season of the WTCR at the wheel of a Honda Civic FK8 Type R TCR. As the manufacturers can no longer be officially involved, it will evolve within the Belgian team Boutsen Ginion Racing which will field two examples, with a driver who has yet to be confirmed.

“I am happy to be able to stay within the Honda family for another year, comments Tiago Monteiro. Since I started with them in 2012, I have the feeling of becoming more and more successful throughout the seasons and I was very well placed to win the title before my accident. »

“The last six months have been particularly difficult, but I will finally be able to get back behind the wheel after benefiting from incredible support, continues the Honda driver. Boutsen Ginion Racing is a competitive team that has already achieved victories in TCR and I can't wait to get back on the circuits. »

Esteban Guerrieri will play for Münnich Motorsport after taking fourth place in the Championship. The Argentinian notably replaced Tiago Monteiro in the final rounds of the 2017 season after starting the year in a Campos Racing Chevrolet Cruze RML.

“TCR is a discipline that continues to grow and I am delighted to be part of the program, says Esteban Guerrieri. I had some great races against the All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport cars last year in the WTCC and it was obvious that their cars were fast. I am therefore optimistic about my chances of winning. »

The first WTCR season will begin on the weekend of April 8 in Marakech (Morocco).
