WTCR – Morbidelli joins forces with Alfa Romeo

The Mulsanne team could not have hoped for a more Italian package. After announcing the entry of two Alfa Romeo Giuliettas for the first season of WTCR (World Touring Car Cup) as well as the arrival of the former European champion Fabrizio Giovanardi, another well-known face of tourism is arriving: Gianni Morbidelli.

The Italian, aged 50, is still in the game, proof of which is his 6th place in the TCR International Series last year in a Volkswagen Golf GTI from the WestCoast team. The former pilot of Formula 1 in the 1990s, has solid experience in touring cars, with various appearances in BTCC (British Championship), WTCC (9th in 2014 in a Chevrolet Cruze from Münnich Motorsport) or in V8 Supercars. In 2006, he participated in the world championship, already with Alfa Romeo (12th):

Gianni Morbidelli brings along engineer Marco Calovolo and marketing manager Nicolo Castello to promote this 100% Italian team. “I am extremely happy to return to a world-level championship, with a brand as prestigious as Alfa Romeo,” said the transalpine driver. It will be a very high level competition, with many experienced teams, which makes this challenge even more attractive. »

The director of operations for the preparer Romeo Ferraris, Michela Cerruti, believes that the Mulsanne team duo “forms the most experienced crew in the WTCR. This is exactly what we needed to prove the Giulietta's potential. » The start of the season is scheduled for Marrakech (Morocco) on April 7 and 8.
