WTCC – Thed Björk gives Volvo a first pole

The Volvo S60s were the most energetic this Saturday during qualifying for the Monza WTCC event. From Q1, the Swedish cars took the lead with Nestor Girolami taking Thed Björk and Nicky Catsburg in his wake, before Björk overtook Monteiro in Q2.

The Portuguese was unable to beat Björk in Q3, the Volvo driver signing a final lap in 1'52″505, propelling him into pole position for the main race, a first for Volvo in the category.

If Tiago Monteiro (Honda) admitted before the weekend that the Civics would not necessarily be to their advantage, the Portuguese nevertheless proved that they will have to reckon with the Japanese cars. The Honda driver fails more than three tenths behind Björk.

The second row will be shared between the Citroën C-Elysée of Rob Huff and the Volvo of Nicky Catsburg. Nestor Girolami will start 5th on the grid for the main race after aborting his attempt in Q3 following an error.

Norbert Michelisz (Honda), Tom Chilton (Citroën C-Elysée – Sébastien Loeb Racing), Esteban Guerrieri (Chevrolet Cruze – Campos Racing), Mehdi Bennani (Citroën C-Elysée – Sébastien Loeb Racing) and Tom Coronel (Chevrolet Cruze – ROAL Motorsport) complete the top 10.

Coronel will start the opening race in pole position. Yann Ehrlacher (Lada Vesta – RC Motorsport) will start 12th in the main race, Aurélien Panis (Honda Civic – Zengo Motorsport) 14th.
