Yann Ehrlacher becomes WTCR champion at 24!

Put under pressure by the experienced Esteban Guerrieri (Honda), Yann Ehrlacher (Lynk & Co) could have lost all his chances after Race 1 of the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) won by his Argentine rival.

The Alsatian, who has never lost the lead in the general classification since the first round in Zolder (Belgium), then only had a 16-unit margin before the two final races at Motorland Aragon (Spain).

Fortunately for him, he was able to start ninth when Esteban Guerrieri was dropped to 18th in Race 2. The mission was almost impossible for the Münnich Motorsport representative and it proved.

Caught in a collision with Bence Boldisz (Cupra), the outgoing vice-champion retired in the first laps. From then on, Yann Ehrlacher only had to go into 'management' mode in sixth place, but vibrations in the tires caused him to break out in a cold sweat.

The nephew of Yvan Muller and son of Cathy Muller remained wise and reached the finish in this position. Here he is, WTCR 2020 champion! The Cyan Racing representative becomes the youngest champion in the discipline, WTCC and WTCR combined, at just 24 years old. S

His progression was linear, despite a short career in Tourism. 10th in the WTCC as an Independent driver in a Lada Vesta in 2017, he then gained momentum with Honda in the WTCR with two victories and a short interlude as championship leader before weakening in the second half of the season (10th)

In 2019, recruitment by Cyan Performance favored him slightly more (9th), but the results did not yet highlight the maturity of his driving.

The celebration in the Muller family will be complete on Sunday evening. Yvan Muller recorded his first success of the year and never let go of the lead of the event. Jean-Karl Vernay (Alfa Romeo) finished second and can still hope to finish the season on the final podium.
