The career change into car Kalle Rovanperä's career has ended earlier than expected. Competing in Super Formula this season, the Finn will not continue in 2026, a decision made following medical advice.
Despite his total commitment to this new challenge, the two-time World Rally Champion's adaptation to single-seaters proved physically demanding. His performances during private testing and his participation in the Formula Regional Oceania series had, however, hinted at promising potential. "He gave his all to meet the challenge of single-seaters, driven by a deep and unwavering desire to progress," greets Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota. Every time he took to the track for private testing, his speed was evident.
As the rides progressed, the improvements were visible, with a constant increase in power and a clear desire to push the limits. "I saw him […] discover new resources within himself and improve his lap times again and again." However, this progress was accompanied by physical difficulties: "After receiving medical advice, we reached the painful conclusion that continuing to run would not be the right choice for him."
A future that is always open
For Akio Toyoda, this withdrawal was not a decision made lightly. Balancing the desire to support his driver's ambition with the need to protect his own health proved difficult. "This decision weighed heavily on me," he says. I wondered what it truly meant to let him chase speed, and what it meant to protect someone you believe in. The Japanese leader fully accepts this choice, made in the long-term interest of the driver. "Ultimately, weighing these responsibilities led me to suspend his participation in this year's Super Formula season."
While this announcement marks a setback, it does not call into question Rovanperä's ambitions on the track. His commitment and passion remain intact, with the prospect of a return in the medium term. "But believe me: his challenge on the track is far from over. His love for cars and his desire to become faster will not fade." Akio Toyoda also wanted to send a message to the fans, aware of the disappointment caused by this decision. “To everyone involved, and to all the fans who have supported him so fervently, I am sincerely sorry that we were unable to meet your expectations. […] As Morizo, I will continue to stand by him—not only as a fellow driver, but also as a teammate who believes in him with all my heart. Thank you for your unwavering and sincere support.” For Kalle Rovanperä, learning does not stop there, but will continue at an adapted pace, with the constant support of those around her.
