The former star of the young pilot program McLaren finally won a major award in Single seat. Nyck de Vries (ART Grand Prix) secured the title Formula 2 at the end of a Race 1 in Sotchi (Russia) controlled from start to finish, Saturday September 28.
The 24-year-old Dutchman got off to a great start from pole position. With soft tires, he was forced to opt for hard compounds on the sixth lap and had to wait for the staggered stops of other drivers before definitively regaining the lead.
This is the fourth victory for the Eurocup Formula champion Renault 2.0 2014 this season. This performance allows him to take the crown with three races in advance!
“I'm having trouble finding the words. I arrived in Russia wanting to prove that I had what it took to be champion”, explained Nyck de Vries in the parc ferme. Despite this dream season, this one will branch off towards Formula E at the end of the year, with an official Mercedes driver contract.
The podium is completed by Nicholas latifi (Dams) and Louis Delétraz (Carlin). Author of a daring tactic by changing tires a few laps from the end, Luca Ghiotto (UNI-Virtuosi) failed at the foot of the podium).
Giuliano Alesi (Trident) only finished 13th. In the running for the podium, Mick Schumacher (Prema) seemed set to make a good comeback from 11th place until worrying smoke escaped from his engine mid-race.
