The 2026 season of Formula 2 The season is about to take an unprecedented turn. Following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races, the championship has officially announced the addition of two new rounds to the calendar: the Miami Grand Prix (May 1-3) and the Canadian Grand Prix (May 22-24). These two events will become the second and third rounds of the season, before a return to Europe for the legendary Monaco Grand Prix in early June. This marks a first in the history of the sport, which has never before raced in North America. This geographical expansion marks a new stage in the development of Formula 2, conceived as the direct feeder series for Formula 1. Formula 1.
"This is excellent news."
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali welcomed this swift adaptation of the calendar: "It's excellent news for our fans, drivers, and teams that Formula 2 will be racing in Miami and Montreal. Bruno (Michel, CEO of Formula 2 (Editor's note) And the entire F2 family has done a fantastic job, working closely with us, the FIA, and the promoters in Miami and Montreal to ensure that the interruption to the championship this season is limited, and I want to thank them for making that possible.”
The same tone was adopted by the International Automobile Federation and its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem: “The addition of these new rounds ensures that the FIA Formula 2 Championship remains strong and balanced, and that it can meet the expectations of our teams, drivers, and fans. The championship’s arrival in North America, in Miami and Montreal, for the first time, marks a significant step in its continued global growth, strengthening its journey alongside Formula 1 and allowing it to reach new audiences.” He nevertheless wants to reiterate the reason why the various motorsport championships are not visiting the Middle East this month and adds: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the current events in the Middle East, and we continue to hope for a swift return to stability. We look forward to racing in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia very soon."
"It was no small feat."
For Bruno Michel, managing director of Formula 2 and the Formula 3This solution represents both a logistical challenge and a sporting opportunity: “We are now heading to Miami and Montreal for the second and third rounds of the 2026 season, respectively. It was no small feat, but bringing F2 to North America for the first time is truly fantastic. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and it allows us to guarantee a return to competition as quickly as possible. It will be a great new challenge for our teams and drivers, who have all welcomed this news with enthusiasm. I’m certain the quality of the racing will generate a lot of excitement among the fans and everyone attending the two Grands Prix.”
Beyond a simple reorganization, this decision illustrates Formula 2's ability to adapt quickly to the vagaries of the international calendar, while pursuing its primary objective: preparing tomorrow's talent for the demands of the highest level. Nothing has yet been announced regarding Formula 3, whose next meeting is scheduled for Monaco in early June. Before that, the next Formula 2 race will take place from May 1st to 3rd in Miami.
