This last race of the season will have been like his season for Oscar piastri : dominant and in control. Starting from pole position, the Australian had a quiet race and won in front Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi) and Felipe Drugovich (UNI-Virtuosi). Despite the Chinese's second place, it was Robert Shwartzman (Prema) who finished vice-champion and who allowed Prema to sign a first double since 2016 (gasly ahead of Giovinazzi in GP2 Series).

Starting on the Super Soft tires like the first four on the grid, Piastri led the race until the 10th lap, when he chose to enter the pit lane to switch to the Medium tires. He then regained control six laps from the end, when the last drivers using a shifted strategy took their turn. The Australian managed to maintain a two-second gap with Zhou throughout the race.

If there was not really a fight for victory, the one for the podium was quite interesting to follow between Theo Pourchaire (ART Grand Prix), Felipe Drugovich (UNI-Virtuosi) and Robert Shwartzman (Prema). The Frenchman, 5th on the grid, almost got third place. The first driver to start in Mediums on the grid, he led the race from the 10th to the 27th lap, until he returned to put on the Super Softs. The Habs then came out virtually 4th, where they finally finished.

Doohan, a costly mistake

Because if he pounced on Shwartzman, making up the five seconds behind him that he had on the Russian six laps from the end, Théo was passed by Drugovich, who was on the same strategy as him, and who clearly seemed to have more rhythm. It remains a great race successfully completed by the Frenchman, handicapped by some physical problems following his crash suffered in the main race in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The ART Grand Prix driver will be able to console himself with the two points for the best lap in the race. He finished 5th in the championship and will definitely aim for the title in 2022.

For his part, the big surprise of qualifying Jack Doohan (MP Motorsport),  who started 2nd for only his second meeting in F2, was surprised in the first round. Fighting with Guanyu Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi) all lap, the Gold Coast native ended up going beyond the curb at turn 9, staying completely flat out on the run-off. But he did not take his foot off the gas when returning to the track and his car logically stalled, ending up in the background. He showed that he will be a contender next year, if his participation is confirmed.
