A record 14 round calendar for Formula 2 in 2022

The pilots complained (rightly) of too long a space-time between the heats of Formula 2 This year ? The promoter responded by hitting hard! In 2022, there will not be eight meetings like in 2021, but fourteen. So of course, the increase is due to the return to two races per weekend, but never since its creation in 2017 has the series had more than 12 race weekends.

No more long tunnels without running. Well almost. There will only be two months between the penultimate round in Sochi (September 23-25) and the final in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for November 18-20. The season, which will begin in Bahrain as was to be the case in 2020, will in any case have the advantage of ending a month earlier than this year.

First time in Imola and Zandvoort

After passing through Jeddah, the Formula 2 field will travel to Imola for the first time in its history, before a usual European program, consisting of Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Baku, Silverstone, Spielberg and Budapest. As the F1 and like her little sister Formula 3, F2 will take part in the Spa-Francorchamps / Zandvoort / Monza triple header, which will also mark its first appearance on the Batavian track.

Already left aside in 2020 and 2021, the French Castellet track will still not host F2, after passing there in 2019 for the last time. The twenty-two drivers who should form the grid will take part in 28 races in 2022! “I am pleased to present to you the most extensive calendar in the history of Formula 2, expressed championship promoter Bruno Michel in a press release. “The latter results from the desire of those involved in F2 to be in contact with F1 as often as possible.”

“Many circuits have expressed their desire to have us in their weekend program, but for obvious cost reasons, we cannot further increase the number of rounds”. Naturally, with so many races and meetings, the question of increasing costs arises. “The schedule will obviously cause an increase in the budget for our teams, but we will support them so that they can manage this as best as possible.”
