A podium that does a lot of good for Pourchaire

Third in the Main Race in the streets of Baku, Théo Pourchaire continues with a new podium and above all regains the lead of the championship. A great operation.

On the shores of the Caspian Sea, one man particularly attracted attention last weekend. This is Oliver Bearman. Pole position, double victory… The Englishman from Prema left nothing to chance in Azerbaijan where he completely relaunched himself. But behind the show of force of the young Briton, another pilot also succeeded in a very good operation: Theo Pourchaire.

Aware that only the title counts this year, he who is competing in his 3e campaign F2, the Sauber Academy protégé seems to have found the right approach. That of not overpiloting when he cannot play wins in order to maximize the points. As in Australia four weeks earlier, the Habs applied the same strategy in the city of the wind. Too fair to push an Oliver Bearman on a cloud, Théo Pourchaire did not panic when Enzo Fittipaldi attacked him to win 3e instead.

« I tried to take the inside but he had DRS and he was faster with aspiration so I wasn't very comfortable braking later, especially since it was a part a bit dirty, explained Théo Pourchaire. I didn't want to make a stupid mistake and once we were side by side I gave him enough room. It was a great battle."

Pourchaire in charge again

Like any driver who puts on his helmet, the ART Grand Prix representative would obviously go home with the winner's trophy. Finally, it is with that of the 3e place that he will do it, perhaps the maximum he could hope for in Baku, where he scored his first podium on the spot where he notably broke his wrist two years ago.

A very encouraging result for him who continues after the 2e place in Australia. “ It feels good, he said at the microphone of Canal+. These are points taken. You have to be consistent. Last year I had a good weekend and a very bad one, then a very good one and a very average one. This season, we only have to do good ones. This is how you win a championship. Here, we can say that it was a successful weekend, 3e in qualifying and in the Main Race. Of course I would like to win every race but there are times when we are slower than other teams and drivers. You have to know how to take what you can take. I am very satisfied. »

And he is right to be satisfied with it since this result allows him to recover the first place in the championship lost in Saudi Arabia to the detriment of Ralph Boschung (Campos) and which has since fallen into the hands of Ayumu Iwasa (DAMS). With the Japanese's zero points last weekend, Théo Pourchaire begins his return to the European rounds in the leader's shoes. It will now be necessary to realize “ only good weekends » as he says to continue his momentum.
