At the Hungaroring, there will be two women competing this weekend in FRECA. While the battle for first place continues to rage between at least five drivers, including the two Frenchmen Enzo Deligny and Evan Giltaire, a French team is preparing to replace one of its drivers. Dutchman Tim Gerhards, a rookie in the discipline and currently 24th in the general standings after three retirements in six races, will not be able to hold his place within the Saintéloc Racing team due to injury.
This Thursday, Maya Weug, second in F1 Academy just behind the French Dorian Pin, was announced as the designated replacement for her compatriot. Knowing FRECA well, the pilot supported by Ferrari has already completed a full season in the category in 2023. Entered by the Finnish team KIC Motorsport, she was also brought in to complete two additional races with this team last year, already as one-off replacements.
Weug versus Pin, a prolonged duel?
Committed for the season alongside the Italian Prema team, Doriane Pin is dominating the F1 Academy championship at this stage. At the same time, the Frenchwoman is finding it more difficult to distinguish herself in FRECA, having made a few mistakes and visibly lacking pace at Spa and Zandvoort. While she missed the first round of the season, which took place alongside the Miami F1 Academy event, the French driver will have the opportunity to measure herself against her rival in a machine that is even more competitive than the F4 cars entered in the women's category.
While Maya Weug achieved her best FRECA result at Spa-Francorchamps in 2023 with a sixth place in Race 2, she had hardly managed to shine in Hungary, managing only a 19th place in Race 1. This weekend, Doriane Pin could hope to aim for points after a difficult start, while the match within the match between the two women could well be one to watch. In F1 Academy, the next deadline will force the patience of observers, since Zandvoort will welcome the 18 drivers entered on August 29, 30 and 31.
