GP2-C1: Gutiérrez escapes damage in Valencia

James Calado (Lotus GP) had managed to maintain the advantage of his pole position won in Race 1 in Valencia but his lead was reduced to nothing following the arrival of the safety car which came to interrupt the race so that the marshals remove debris from the rear wing of Tom Dillmann (Rapax). The Briton had to settle for ninth place at the finish while his teammate Esteban Gutiérrez took advantage of the misfortunes of the competition to win on the circuit where he won his first success last year. The Mexican pushed the leader Fabio Leimer (Racing Engineering) into a mistake in the last corner at the third restart of the race, allowing Luiz Razia (Arden International) to momentarily take control of the event before being caught by the Lotus driver. The Brazilian finally settled for the last step of the podium after being passed by Marcus Ericsson (iSport International) who put in a great performance starting from ninth position.

Fabio Leimer failed at the foot of the podium in front of Ryo Haryanto (Carlin) and Nathanaël Berthon (Racing Engineering) who produced a superb performance by climbing to sixth place after starting from 15th place. The top eight is completed by Max Chilton (Carlin) and Davide Valsecchi (Dams), who has come a long way after once again completely missing his start. Johnny Cecotto Jr (Barwa Addax Team) should have benefited from this pole position for Race 2 but the Venezuelan received a penalty for a dangerous stop. Stefano Coletti (Team Coloni) completes the top ten. Tom Dillmann (Rapax) could hope to put himself forward while the Frenchman is looking for financial support to continue his season, but the latter had to abandon after having contact during the race.

A rain of penalties fell on the competitors, the first victim of which was Davide Valsecchi who saw himself demoted from eighth to 18th place, propelling James Calado (Lotus) to pole after the Briton had already won first place in the Race 1. Addax drivers Josef Kral and Johnny Cecotto Jr were also penalized, as was Jolyon Palmer (iSport International) held responsible for the accident with Fabrizio Crestani (Venezueal GP Lazarus) who ended his race on the roof.
