Chevrolet received a heavy penalty which will complicate its fight for the Manufacturers' title against Honda. The Detroit manufacturer was penalized by 220 points after the St Petersburg GP (Florida) for carrying out “non-minor” repairs on 11 of the 12 single-seaters he powers. The sanction was applied at the rate of 20 units withdrawn for each car involved.
Although the nature of the repairs has not been disclosed, Chevrolet was obliged to carry out these operations in order to ensure stay within the limit of four engines authorized for the season. With the manufacturers receiving points for its three best-placed cars, one point for pole and two more for the fastest lap in the race, the bow-tie brand scored 128 points.
Honda now has a 162-point lead over Chevrolet before the Louisiana GP contested on April 12. Points in the Drivers and Teams rankings do not change.
