Fernando Alonso: “Understeer that I didn't expect”

After his almost faultless performance in 2017, the start of the month of the Indianapolis 500 seems more complicated for Fernando Alonso. The double world champion F1 came to kiss the wall of the American oval yesterday in free practice 2, putting an early end to the running of Mclaren racing.

If the accident fortunately had no untoward consequences, Alonso can rail against this precious lost time, after a rather complicated start to the Indy 500 campaign in the Woking clan, quite far from the top 10 in terms of timing.

“I had understeer, and even though I lifted my foot at the entrance to the corner, it wasn't enough and I completely lost the front aero, analyzes the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2018 who still needs to get acquainted with the new aero kit now in force in the series.

I think that It was just understeer which I didn't expect.. I was moving a little close to another car and suddenly, in the middle of the corner, I completely lost grip.

The wall came too close and too fast. Unfortunately, it happened today. We're going to waste a little more time. I'm sorry for the team, but we are learning and hope that we will come back stronger tomorrow (today, Editor's note). I'm disappointed and sad for the team and for the guys. »

Alonso, however, tries to retain a little positive in the evolution of his car on the few loops completed yesterday, as the big meeting on May 26, decisive for his quest for the Triple Crown, draws ever closer.

“It was much better than yesterday, insists Alonso. We were definitely going in the right direction. There were small steps learned today that we hope to bring forward for next time. »

To be confirmed from free practice 3 this Thursday, before EL4 on Friday and the first qualifying this weekend.
