Indy 500 – Three former winners among 33 entries

A little less than three weeks before the 97th edition of the Indianapolis 500, the organizers have just revealed the list of participants. There are currently 32 of them on a list that could include 33. Among these, there are three former winners of the famous American race: Dario Franchitti (2007, 2010 and 2012) and Scott Dixon (2008). will once again defend the colors of Chip Ganassi Racing while Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009) will fight for Team Penske. This is also the first time since 1987 that two triple-winning drivers will compete at the Indy 500 to join the very exclusive club of quadruple winners of the event. Until now, only AJ Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977), Al Unser (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987) and Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) have achieved this feat.

Four champions ofIndycar Series will also be in the running. If two are among the winners of the Indianapolis 500, Dario Franchiti and Scott Dixon, we will also have to count on Ryan Hunter-Reay, the reigning champion, and Tony Kanan. Former pilot of Formula 1 and four-time Champ Car winner, Frenchman Sébastien Bourdais will also be one to watch, in the same way as the two other French pilots entered in the United States: simon pagenaud and Tristan Vautier. This will also be a first for the latter. The driver from Corenc is one of four rookies this year, alongside conor daly, AJ Allmendinger and Carlos Munoz.

Still in terms of statistics, it should be noted that more than half of the drivers entered, 17 out of 32, have all won at least one race, whether in the Indycar Series or in the now defunct Champ Car. Finally, three women will participate in the Indianapolis 500 this season: the Swiss Simona De Silvestro, the Englishwoman Pippa Mann et the Brazilian Ana Beatriz.
