IndyCar – Freeze on aero kit development in 2017, universal kit in 2018

After allowing Chevrolet and Honda to develop their own aerodynamic kits since the 2015 season, the IndyCar Series will introduce new rules starting next season.

First of all, the development of the kits will be stopped, the teams having to use in 2017 the current specifications seen on the single-seaters. 2018 will mark a further step with the arrival of a universal kit.

American officials do not hide their long-term objectives with this project, including the hope of attracting new engine manufacturers to the series, to interfere in the debate between Chevrolet and Honda, who currently provide the field.

“Today’s announcement follows extensive dialogue with Chevrolet, Honda, our teams and shareholders, comments Jay Frye, IndyCar President of Competition and Operations. This decision centers on what is best for the future of the series. »

Beyond the next season, American championship officials are already focusing on 2018 and the universal aero kit. " There car 2018 represents a tremendous opportunity for IndyCar and design work is already underway, Frye points out.

The aim of the universal car is to look good, be less aero-dependent, offer more mechanical grip and downforce and incorporate the latest safety improvements. »
