IndyCar – Newgarden: “The feeling of being able to win every weekend”

Replacing Juan Pablo Montoya in the Dallara – Chevrolet n°2 of Team Penske had enough to put pressure on. However, when entering the decisive straight line for the attribution of the title IndyCar, it's good Joseph Newgarden who leads the field in the IndyCar Series.

The new recruit for Roger Penske's team, with three victories this season, including two in a row over the last two meetings in Toronto, Canada and Mid-Ohio, is ahead of his teammate Helio Castroneves, the 2015 champion Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing) and the French simon pagenaud, title holder.

Besides this position, it is the confidence that the American now has that delights him the most. « I think we're still learning, estimates Newgarden on the discipline's website. On #2, we are in the process of understanding several things.

We didn't have a perfect year, but we had a very good year, for sure. We had races where I was convinced I could absolutely win, and we did. The good thing about it is that on every weekend we feel like we can win the race.

It doesn't matter if it's a road event, a street event, or an oval, I'm just confident about our chances of winning the race. I think it highlights where we've come as a group, Team Penske as a whole, and No. 2, with me coming in this year. »

Sonoma, decisive final?

Simon Pagenaud recently admitted that he thought that the final in Sonoma, California on September 17, could prove decisive in determining the future 2017 champion. An opinion shared by Josef Newgarden, who could become the first American IndyCar champion since Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2012 .

« The advance was not significant for anyone during the year, believes Newgarden. Nobody really opened up a gap. I think it will be like this until Sonoma. This is a good position for the championship. I would rather be hunted than chased. »
