How Indy 500 Qualifying Works

The Indy 500 qualifying format is very specific and unlike other formats used in IndyCar.

The first qualifying session, held this Saturday, May 20 from 17 p.m. to 23:50 p.m. (Paris time), will split the grid into two groups. The nine fastest drivers will fight for pole during the second session on Sunday May 21. The other competitors will compete on the same day to aim for the best position from 10th to 33rd place. The program could however be postponed, the weather is still uncertain with storms around the circuit.

The order of qualifications will be decided based on the results achieved during “Fast Friday” won by Sebastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing). Each driver will be able to complete two training laps before their attempt which consists of a relay of 4 consecutive laps. Each competitor will be able to make 3 attempts, but a new attack will automatically cancel their previous time.

Indy 500 qualifying will also be an opportunity for drivers to score points in the Championship, with 42 points for the pole sitter up to one point for the last.

Indy 500 qualifying sometimes required drivers to fight to get to the start of the race, but all competitors will be allowed to start, numbering 33.
