Sato winner at Gateway, Pagenaud threatens Newgarden in the championship

Takuma Sato signs his second victory in 2019 after a duel with Ed Carpenter while Simon Pagenaud takes second place in the championship after the troubles of all his rivals for the title.

Sato winner at Gateway, Pagenaud threatens Newgarden in the championship

Two men left the Gateway (Illinois) oval with a smile on the night of Saturday August 24 to Sunday August 25: Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) and simon pagenaud (Penské). The first scored his second victory in IndyCar in 2019 while the second city was the highest ranked contender for the title.

For the Japanese, however, the event started badly, being stuck in the peloton at the first turn. Forced to slow down, the winner of the 500 Indianapolis 2017 must have worked from last place! 

 

 

Coming back through the neutralizations, Takuma Sato resisted the comeback led at full speed by oval specialist Ed Carpenter (Ed Carpenter Racing) and preserved a slim lead of four hundredths. 

“This win is so special, behind the Indy 500, but it’s very emotional,” recognized the driver heavily criticized for his behavior in the first lap pileup at Pocono the previous weekend.

The other race to watch was the one between Josef Newgarden (Penske), Alexander Red (Andretti), Simon Pagenaud (Penske) and Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi), the quartet vying for the crown. Cocorico is the winner of the 500 Indy 2019 who did the best, with a fifth place. 

 

The Frenchman led his car through accidents, including that of his compatriot Sébastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing), and did not suffer any mechanical problems. A success from which Scott Dixon (abandonment) did not benefit, eliminated after an engine problem. 

 

Alexander Rossi (13th), in contention for victory until around twenty laps from the finish, had to urgently refuel. But the biggest surprise concerned Josef Newgarden, who was sent into a spin in the very last corner after a fight with Santino Ferrucci (Dale Coyne Racing)!

“I was glad I didn’t hit the wall, explained the leader of the general. The engine was still running, I was relieved to be heading back to the right direction of the track. » Josef Newgarden went from fourth to seventh place, and thus conceded six points in the affair.

In the championship, whilethere are only two events left, Simon Pagenaud is 38 points behind his teammate. Alexander Rossi follows with 46 points behind. Scott Dixon is 70 points behind.
