One more point for the pole sitter

Whereas previously only the author of the greatest number of laps in the lead was rewarded with three bonus points, now pole position also earns its holder an additional point.

Once is not customary, theIndyCar Series is directly inspired by its little sister, the Indy Lights. Indeed, it was officially decided that a bonus point and a check for $10 would now be awarded to the pole sitter of the day, while the author of the greatest number of laps in the lead would now only receive two additional points and no longer three as was the case before. Until now, only the pole sitter of the Indianapolis 00 was rewarded with a check for $500. This is the first time since 100 that a point will be awarded at the end of qualifying.

“The battle for first place on the grid is always filled with emotion and tension. ", declared Brian Barnhardt, President of the discipline. “It seems entirely appropriate to me that a driver who is able to survive four laps at the limit on an oval, or get through three eliminations on a road or urban track, can be rewarded for his efforts. »

As for the drivers, Ryan Briscoe believes that this new rule is welcome:
“It's great to reward a driver for pole position, because it's so much work and it's so difficult to get one in this championship. Now there will be one more challenge during the weekend, one more satisfaction for whoever sets the best time. »

Already very close in the past, there is no doubt that the gaps between the drivers will be even tighter with the introduction of this additional point. In addition, the teams formerly entered in Champ Car will be better prepared this year, so this promises us a great show, for our greatest pleasure!
