Will Power at the end of the suspense

Of the three Penske team drivers, Will Power was certainly the least expected in Sao Paulo. However, he was able to take advantage of quite exceptional racing conditions to win. At the start, the pole sitter, Dario Franchitti (Target Chip Ganassi Racing), managed to maintain the race lead while, further away, the beginner Takuma Sato (KV Racing Technology) missed braking at the first chicane, hitting Scott Dixon (Target Chip Ganassi Racing), which blocks the road to Helio Castroneves (Team Penske), who can already give up on victory.

Behind, spectacular image, Mario Moraes' car climbs that of Marco Andretti and falls on it. Fortunately, the grandson of the World Champion of F1 Mario Andretti was unhurt. The interruption dragged on and, at the restart, Franchitti retained the lead ahead of Tagliani (FAZZT) and Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport).

After the pit stop burst, Simona de Silvestro (HVM), debutant in IndyCar Series, finds himself in first position, but the appearance of a few drops benefits Ryan Hunter-Reay, impeccable in these conditions. He took the lead before the rain intensified, Danica Patrick (Andretti Autosport) was hit by Dan Wheldon (Panther Racing) and the organizers brought out the red flag.

After more than three quarters of an hour interruption, the race resumed and Hunter-Reay quickly managed to regain the lead of the race which he had lost. However, he sees Briscoe rushing towards him, author of an irresistible return to the top of the table and who ends up taking control.

Unfortunately for him, the Australian missed a turn and ended up in a tire wall, letting Hunter-Reay take the lead again. The most consistent in the race, the Andretti Autosport driver deserved the victory but, three laps from the finish, Will Power (Penske) moved inside and took the lead, finally winning.
