Small revolution in promotional formulas. For the first time this weekend, on the occasion of the first meeting of the 2023 season in Bahrain, the Formula 2 and Formula 3 will use sustainable fuel. This innovation developed by the Saudi oil company Aramco is being tested in the lower championships before the F1 will switch to sustainable fuels in 2026, in line with new engine regulations. The arrival of sustainable fuel was announced last September and its introduction for Bahrain has therefore just been confirmed.

As approved by the World Motor Sport Council, 55% of fuel will be sustainable throughout the 2023 F2 and F3 season. Both championships will gradually increase the share of sustainable fuel from year to year before reaching 100% for the 2027 season, a year after the introduction of 100% sustainable fuel in the Formula 1 World Championship. This new fuel had already tested during pre-season testing in February. F2 and F3 drivers have completed more than 8000 laps with this new technology.

“An extraordinary breakthrough in motorsport”

“The FIA has long been an advocate of the power of motorsport to bring about positive change through technology., said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA. The introduction of advanced sustainable fuels approved by the World Motor Sport Council into Formula 2 and 3 is an important step in our sport's journey towards carbon neutrality. This forms a key part of our progress towards implementing 100% sustainable fuels in Formula 1. Our sport is leading the way in delivering innovative and proactive solutions that have huge potential for the future of all transport. »

“Today is a very important day, rejoiced Bruno Michel, CEO of Formula 2 and Formula 3. It marks an extraordinary breakthrough in motorsport, with F2 and F3 becoming the first championships to introduce advanced sustainable fuels to the circuits. This is another major step towards making our sport more sustainable. We have worked very hard behind the scenes with our partner Aramco and we are proud to see that all fifty-two cars now run on these fuels. »
