Latifi makes the best start at the Hungaroring

Nicholas latifi (Dams) secured victory by taking the lead at the start of the first race F2 weekend in Hungary. Starting from 3rd position, the junior driver of Williams beat the pole sitter Nyck de Vries (ART GP) as well as Luca Ghiotto (UNI-Virtuosi) and subsequently remained in control until the checkered flag.

Nyck de Vries, however, protected his place as championship leader by taking second place, while it was Jack Aitken (Campos Racing) who completed the podium after starting from 7th position. After gaining two places when the lights went out, the resident of the Renault Sport Academy gained two more places against Mick Schumacher (Prema Racing) and Luca Ghiotto in the pits.

Luca Ghiotto could only take 6th position. While he finished ahead of Sergio Sette Camara (Dams) and Nobuharu Matsushita (Carlin), the Italian was penalized for an infraction under the virtual safety car regime.

Mick Schumacher should start from pole for Race 2 after finishing 8th behind Jordan King (MP Motorsport). The German finished in front Guanyu-Zhou (UNI-Virtuosi) and Callum Ilott (Sauber Junior Team by Charouz).

The offbeat strategy with a long first stint did not pay off for Anthoine Hubert (BWT Arden). The Frenchman may have set the best lap in the race, but his 11th position did not allow him to score the two bonus points. His compatriot Giuliano Alesi (Trident) finished 13th behind Nikita mazepin (ARTGP).

Update. The commissioners finally decided to remove penalties for Luca Ghiotto and Jordan King. The Italian ranks 4th ahead of Sergio Sette Camara and the Briton.

F2 Race 2 at the Hungaroring will be contested this Sunday from 11:25 a.m. It will be broadcast live on Canal+ Décalé.
