GP2 is banking on continuity in 2015

Contested on the sidelines of certain rounds of the World Championship of F1, the GP2 Series will begin its eleventh season in 2015. The calendar revealed today demonstrates real continuity for one of the main series for accession to the premier discipline. As in 2014, the opening of the debates will take place on the Sakhir track in Bahrain from April 17 to 19, before starting the European part of the championship from Barcelona on May 8. Monaco, Silverstone, and even Monza will once again be part of the pillars of the season. Sochi (October 9-11) and Abu Dhabi (November 27-29) will conclude the season. The only unknown is the German round from July 17 to 19, which is still indicated as “to be announced”. It is on the Nürburgring that this round should take place, if we refer to the first versions of the F1 2015 calendar.

“I am pleased that once again all our events will take place alongside F1, explains Bruno Michel, boss of the GP2 Series. This is the best way for young drivers, not only to learn as many F1 tracks as possible, but also to showcase their skills directly in front of the F1 paddock. With the introduction of DRS in 2015, which will be the only significant technical change to our cars, GP2 is the ideal category to prepare drivers for the next step. The season calendar is a balance between racing on F1 circuits, in Europe and abroad, and cost control with eleven events, in order to allow our thirteen teams to maintain a sustainable economic model. »

On the team side, the main change comes from the takeover of Caterham by the Status Grand Prix team. DAMS, Carlin and even ART Grand Prix will be there again. Only two drivers have so far been announced, the Frenchman Charles Pic at Campos Racing, and the Colombian Julian Leal at Carlin.
