The Pau Grand Prix canceled again in 2021

The Modern and Historic versions of the Pau Grand Prix continue with a second year of absence, officially due to the coronavirus. The question of the long-term survival of the event arises.

The Pau Grand Prix canceled again in 2021

The script stutters. Already canceled in 2020 due to the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic, the Grand Prix de Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) will not return in 2021. The Béarnaise event is once again paying the price for Covid-19, as explained by the organizer, ASAC Basco- Béarnais, on his Facebook page this Thursday, November 4 in the evening.

“We had put the dates on the Federation calendar (French Motorsport, FFSA) and we have remained silent until now because we remained hopeful of a return to normal and a health situation that would improve at the end of the year.

Unfortunately this is not the case and given that the organization of such an event begins at least six months in advance, in consultation with the interlocutors of the City, SRO and HVM the speakers of modern and historic GPs to remove these dates from the calendar. »

This press release therefore indicates that, in an ideal world, the modern Pau Grand Prix intended to take place with the French Championship FFSAGT while its historical leaning was to accommodate the series usually seen on Historic Tour.

Since its creation in 1933, never had the Pau Grand Prix experienced such a hiatus (apart from the Second World War). In 2010, the competition took a one-year break amid political conflict at the municipality following the expiry of the contract linking Pau to the WTCC.

We had to wait for long editions before subsequently finding a platform worthy of the history of this flagship event on the calendar. It is therefore entirely legitimate to raise the unfortunate question: what will be the future of this Grand Prix?

This one is not in the odor of sanctity among the (rare) inhabitants lining the circuit in town. It has been completely absent from political declarations since the municipal elections last July, while other sports fundamental to Pau culture (rugby, basketball, horse riding, canoeing in particular) benefit from particular attention.

No word concerning a possible 2022 vintage appears in the press release organizers.
